Full Description
During the Margate to Weatherlees Hill pipeline project, thirty-eight ditches were recorded in area 15. The majority did not appear to form any coherent pattern of field system or enclosure however. Five pits were recorded, likely to be contemporary, and dated to the Romano-British period. A single hearth, partially truncated on the eastern side by a modern pipe trench, was recorded in the area. Two inhumations were located close to the edge of the area, also partially truncated by a modern pipe trench. Grave goods, dated to the Romano-British period, accompanied one of the graves. One inhumation was located at the base of a ditch terminus on an east-west alignment with the skull pointing to the west. An area of rammed chalk and flint was reocrded at the northern end of the area which was probably placed to consolidate an area of boggy ground (1)
