Monument record TR 36 SW 124 - Romano-British drainage ditches, hearth and two inhumations

Summary

Thirty-eight ditches were recorded on the site although the majority did not appear to form any coherent pattern of field system or enclosure. Five pits were recorded, likely to be contemporary, dated to the RB period. A single hearth and two inhumations were recorded in the exczvation area.

Full Description

In area 15 there were: Thirty-eight ditches were recorded on the site although the majority did not appear to form any coherent pattern of field system or enclosure. Five pits were recorded, likely to be contemporary, dated to the RB period. A single hearth, partially truncated on the eastern side by a modern pipe trench was recorded in the area. Two inhumations were located close to the edge of the area, partially truncated by a modern pipe trench. Grave goods, dated to the Romano-British period, accompanied one of the graves. On einhumation was locates at the base of a ditch terminus on an east-west alignment. The feet of the skeleton were palced on the lope of the terminal and the skull pointing to the west. An area of rammed chalk and flint was reocrded at the northern end of the area which was probably to consolidate an area of boggy ground (1)
