Full Description
The desk based assessment revealed that probably no structures were built prior to the 18th century. Maps from the 18th century indicates stabilising of the island using timber wharves and dumping of artifical material. The crane shown on the map of Ordnance Wharf in 1825 would, given the nature of the ground, probably have needed a substantial masonry or brick base possibly built on timberpilings. The evaluation trenches revealed that most of the wharf is topped with concrete foundations dating from the early 20th century built on dumped material which is sitting on the natural intertidal mud.. Some remains of the 18th century gunpowder works are surviving at the north end of the site. Given the small scale of investigation provided by the evaluation trenches, the precise nature of the surviving structural remains is conjectural but could represent a loading bay or crane base(1).
