Full Description

A watching brief carried out in 1992 found no archaeological material (3)

During an archaeological evaluation at Whitfield and Aspen School, a prehistoric feature thought to be a large shallow hollow, over 8m in diameter, was revealed. The fill of the feature produced 11 sherds of prehistoric pot. The nature of the pot is undertermined and was associated with a number of burnt flints. The feature is thought to be isolated because no other prehistoric material was recovered from the site. The function of the feature is also undetermined.

A possible medieval ditch was observed close to Mayfield Road. The ditch was just under 2m wide and 35mm deep. A single sherd of pottery dated the ditch to the late eleventh- or early twelfth-century. The nature of the sherd is undetermined and the date provided by this find cannot be considered secure.

A number of post-medieval features were also recorded and the site appears to have been disturbed by a significant degree of modern activity.(1)

A later watching brief in autumn 2006, recorded further evidence for the accumulation of prehistoric pot and waste flakes in a slight natural depression on top of the underlying subsoil (2).
