Full Description
The location of a brickfield is indicated by a surveyors report dated 1805 for Little Buckland Farm in an early nineteenth century estate atlas of the Earl of Aylesford. It is stated that there is "a good mine of Brickearth" in "the meadow below the House". This meadow of nearly 4 acres lay on the west bank of the River Medway. (1)
A brickfield is shown in a similar location in 1866 on the Ordnance Survey map. Maidstone. Entries headed "Little Buckland" in rate assessments of 1891 refer to "Land late Brickfield, Wharf and Cottage" owned by the Allington Quarry and Brick Co. Ltd. are likely to refer in part to this site.(2) & (3)
