[TQ 7494 6924] Roman House found A.D.1888 [T.I.] ['A'] [TQ 7491 6933] Roman Foundations found A.D.1887 [T.I.] ['B'] (1) ['A'] When excavating for chalk the remains of a Roman house were found. There is no evidence to indicate what the building was.(2) ['B'] Foundations of a Roman villa found here in 1887. (3) Close to QUARRY HOUSE Roman remains have been found on various occasions, and especially in 1887-9, during excavations of chalk for the cement works. Only a small piece - perhaps a corner - of an actual building was found, a wall of rubble and rough stone, with a stone capital built into it, an adjacent floor of rammed chalk, and much debris of flue and other tiles, mortar, coloured wall plaster, etc. Other remains have been found in four or five rubbish pits of various sizes, one close outside the walling, others in the vicinity. Finds inlcude: Pottery. Much Samian, including an embossed piece of 1st cent. Fragment imitation Samian with Castor affinities. A piece or two of Castor, much Upchurch and ordinary wares. Bronze. Statuette, 5 1/2" high, of a wingless Cupid. Bracelets, pins, rings and fibulae. Iron. Ploughshare, found 12' deep at the bottom of a pit - ill-preserved. Horse's bit, horseshoes and part of a lock. Bottle glass. Many bone and ivory pins: a worked deer-horn. Broken jet ornament. Numerous tiles, bearing an incised pattern which closely resembles a common stamped pattern. Coins. Iron Age bronze coin. One each large AE of Nero, Domitian, Marcus, Faustina. Denarius of Trajan. One each 3 AE of Aemilian, Tetricus II, Allectus. Several Constantinian AE. Besides these signs of an inhabited house, a lead coffin was found before 1838, a little to the south [TQ 76 NW 14] (4) Description of the finds made in 1887. A bronze socketed axe, looped, was found in one of the pits. (5) Description of the finds made in 1888-9. The statuette of Cupid and the coins of Probus and Tetricus were found in the same pit as the ploughshare. The site of the Roman house lies about 140' from the old QUARRY HOUSE See AO/58/56/2, 5 and 8. (6) Add. ref. (7) I.A. coin of DUBNOVELLAUNUS found near QUARRY HOUSE in 1898. Separately illustrated, AE. 36 1/4 grains. (8) Add. ref. to coin. (9) Finds from this building, seen in Maidstone and Rochester museums, include bronze armillae, rings, bone pins, fragmentary glassware and coins. (10) Additional bibliography.
