Full Description

The following text is from the original listed building designation:
1. 5272 LITTLE CHART CALEHILL PARK Ruins of the original Calehill House TQ 94 NW 10/130 14.2.67. II 2. There have been at least 3 houses known as Calehill here. The estate belonged to the Darell family from 1410 until the C20. To the south-east of the building now known as Calehill House are the ruins of the original house, built by Sir John Darell who died in 1438. These are of stone rubble and include a C15 window of 2 cinquefoil-headed lights. In the C18 another house was built by Philip Darell to the south-east (subsequently demolished), and the older building fell into ruins.
Listing NGR: TQ9408247169 (1)

Part of the original house was excavated, revealing lengths of walling containing a slot window, a larger window embrasure, and a blocked door. (2)

Evaluation in respect of a planning application for new leisure facilities on the site of an exisiting swimming pool within the site of the former manor house. The work revealed structural archaeology including wall footings and floor or yard surfaces. Although no in situ datable finds were recovered, demolition layers contained building material, worked stone (Ashlar) suggesting the presence of a stone-built structure in Gothic style. Most of the in situ structural featues can be shown to pre-date the 19th century with some building material databale to the 16th/17th century. No direct link between the burial features and the standing walls to the east of the swimming pool was established, but it seems likely that they belong to the same buildiong complex, possibly forming part of the original manor house.(3)

A number of restistance anomalies were found that could be of archaeological interest, although some are thought to be modern.(4)
