Monument record TQ 76 NW 54 - Romano-British burial ground, Strood

Summary

Romano-British burial ground, discovered in 1853, during the building of houses in Strood. As well as a number of inhumation burials, a variety of grave goods were found; these included coins, charcoal, oyster shells and a puddingstone quern. The original siting of this discovery at Cage Lane, Strood could not be traced on any of the earlier O.S. editions. May be part of a Roman cemetery found at Brook (see TQ 76 NE 5).

Full Description

A Roman burial ground was discovered in 1853, during the building of houses in Cage Lane, Strood, on the north-east side of the London road. A number of skeletons were found buried in trenches with pottery, three Roman coins, charcoal, oyster shells and a puddingstone quern. [Cage Lane, Strood, was not traced on any of the earlier O.S. editions. It is possible that Steele (1) made an error for Cage Lane, Chatham, (TQ 763 676), and that this is part of TQ 76 N.E. 5] (1-2) No further information. (3)
