Full Description
Description from record TR 15 NW 80:
(TR 14785792. Sited from OS 1:1250 1974). During the digging of a trench in 1982 for the construction of a new gas main opposite No 24 High Street, workmen exposed the tough well- constructed fabric of the top side of the King's Bridge, which was built in the 12th century. (1) King's Bridge, High Street (TR 14795794. Sited from HHR map). Grade II*. Built on medieval foundations. Dated 1734 under the parapet. A stone records that the bridge was widened 10ft in the year 1769 (for full description see list). (2) The King's Bridge: Observed by CAT, 1982. A trench cut from the intersection of the High Street with Stour Street to "The Weavers", exposed an extensive sequence of medieval and post-medieval street-metallings. Many of the earlier streets were mixed with or sealed by flood-silt. Also revealed was part of the eastern arch of the late 12th century King's Bridge. The bridge was double-arched, the eastern arch having a mill-leat passing beneath it to the King's Mill first mentioned c1150, which is situated under present 24 High Street. In 1769 the bridge was widened on the north side and the roads either side of the bridge raised and thickly metalled to prevent flooding. Much of the material used in this widening derived from a triple arched section of the northern city wall over the river called the Water Lock, demolished in the same year.
