Monument record TQ 76 NW 106 - Possible Roman burials, near Strood Temple, Rochester

Summary

Inhuamtion burial during the cutting of a trench in 1958 near Strood Temple. The burial consisted of a fully extended male skeleton. The discovery of a sherd of 3rd/4th century Romano-British pottery indicated the burial to be Roman in date. The inhumation had completely disturbed an earlier one of which only part of the skull and a few long bones remained. Both burials had been partially disturbed by a post medieval pit.

Full Description

(TQ 733 685 sited to Temple Manor only). In 1958 a service trench revealed an inhumation SE of the camera at Strood Temple which was subsequently excavated. It comprised a fully extended male (?) skeleton. The body had been lying on its back with the head roughly to the east. A Romano- British sherd was found in the grave fill of 3rd/4th century type, which may suggest that the burials were of this, rather than medieval date. The inhumation had completely disturbed an earlier one of which only part of the skull and a few long bones remained. Both burials had been partially disturbed by a post medieval pit. (1)
