Full Description

Description from record TR 15 NW 588:
A building of mid 16th century origins is situated near the railway line at Canterbury East Station. It is the sole surviving building of the Dane John Manor estate and is Listed.(1) the main range is of a two storeys in red brick with stone dressing(now rendered) and a door and serveral windows of 16th century date.

Description from record TR 15 NW 216:
No 45 Gordon Road (Dane John Works) [TR 14795718 - sited from HHR map]. Grade II. Mid 16thc building, the sole remaining building of the Dane John Manor estate. Probably built by John Brown Halles who acquired the estate c1540. (1) The manor house stood parallel to this building towards the city. It was demolished in 1752. (2) The last surviving 16th century building of the Dane John Manor, a fine brick building, was examined by the Canterbury Archaeological Trust. All the other buildings were destroyed by the building of the railway in 1859. (3)

2. Mid C.16 building, the sole remaining building of the Dane John Manor estate. (The other buildings were all pulled down in 1859 to make way for the railway.) Probably built by John Brown Halles who acquired the estate in about 1540. 2 storeys rendered, but underneath of C.16 red brick with Caenstone dressings. Tiled roof; west end has a crow-stepped gable end. Irregular, mainly C,19 generation and C.16 or earlier arched doorcase in Caenstone. On the south west side, 2 C.19 square brick oasts with pyramidal tiled roofs have been added. The interior of the C.16 part retains many original oak floor beams and joists and a C.16 roof of the side purlin type with windbraces and queenposts.
