Description from record TR 15 NW 393:
No 37 St Dunstan's Street [TR 14255835 sited from OS 1/1250 1970]. Grade II. A medieval timber framed building refaced in the early 19th century. (1-2)

The Canterbury UAD states that this was a Fremlins/Whitbread/Shephered Neame inn.

This inn was so called, apparently, because there was a monument, in the form of a cross standing in the street between the inn and St. Dunstan's Church.

In 1803 a Directory lists the inn with Mrs Rye as the innkeeper and in 1846 the keeper was Edward Potts.

It was for a time a popular inn with some of the Kent County cricketers, including John Shepherd. Mr & Mrs R Collins, innkeepers in 1974, flew out to the West Indies to be guests of West Indian cricketer Bernard Julien who lodges at the Monument whilst playing for Kent.

The 1987 inn sign is obviously not representing the monument that once stood outside but is an artist's impression of the war memorial in Buttermarket. (3)

2. A mediaeval timber-framed building refaced in the early C19. 2 storeys stuccoed. Old tiled roof with modern double dormer. 2 blanks and 2 sashes with verticals only on lst floor. Ground floor has 2 cambered sashes with keystone and glazing bars intact. 2 doors, 1 having a pedimented surround incorporating the name of the Inn. Plinth. 2 stone steps.
Nos 34 to 38 (consec) together with Nos 2 to 8 (even) Whitstable Road form a group.
