Full Description

[TQ 72197548] Jutish iron girdle hanger found 1920 (1). Jutish settlement site found 1920 in the garden of Westcourt, where Mr. F. Wright excavated several pits which had been dug in the chalk. He found an iron girdle hanger of the key variety (9 1/2" long: now in the British Museum), much burnt matter and remains of domestic animals (2). Twenty separate deposits of domestic animal bones found on western margin of West Court Garden. With bones was found a 6th c. girdle hanger. (Authority - Hercules Read) (3). The evidence for siting (by Authority 1) is not known and the find spot must therefore be considered as approximate only (4). These remains came from a burnt section visible in the face of the quarry to the west of the farm. The finds included some pottery which is also probably in the British Museum (5). Enquiries at West Court Farm, where the late Mr. Wright's descendants still live, produced no further information. The quarry in question has now been filled in (6).
