Summary

The earthwork remains of a small oval mound, probably an example of a 19th century or earlier stock refuge mound constructed on low-lying pasture within the marshlands of the Hoo Peninsula and the margins of the Thames Estuary. These were mapped from RAF 1951 aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project. Since being photographed in 1951 this mound may have been partially or completely destroyed through clay quarrying for the local cement industry.

Full Description

The earthwork remains of a small oval mound measuring 12.5m x 20m, centred at TQ 7255 7691. This is probably an example of a 19th century or earlier stock refuge mound constructed on low-lying pasture within the marshlands of the Hoo Peninsula and the margins of the Thames Estuary. These mounds have been referred to and identified in contemporary writings (Spurrell, 1885).These were mapped from RAF 1951 aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project. (1-2) Since being photographed in 1951 this mound may have been destroyed through clay quarrying for the local cement industry.
