Summary

Grade II* listed building. Main construction periods 1812 Crabble Corn Mill is located in Crabble in Dover and was built in the early 19th century by an architect unknown at the time of this record’s amendment. The mill was originally used to produce flour, at first for troops posted in Kent during the Napoleonic Wars. The water powered mill is made up of two weatherboarded storeys, with lucam, above 3 brick storeys, with breastshot wheel, 5 pairs of stones with governors and extensive auxiliary machinery including a large bolter.The mill ceased operation in 1890 but has since been restored and is maintained by the Crabble Corn Mill Trust and opened to the public in 1990.

Description from record TR 24 SE 33:
(TR 2995 4306) Crabble Mill (paper) [NAT] (1) Crabble Mill lies on the River Dour just SW of the A2, 2 miles, 3.2 kmfrom the front at Dour. It is an exceptionally fine breast-shot mill built during the Napoleonic Wars at the turn of the 18th/19th centuries. There are two weatherboarded storeys, with lucam, above 3 brick storeys, with breastshot wheel, 5 pairs of stones with governorsand extensive auxilliary machinery including a large bolter. The mill ceased work in 1890 but has been fully restored by the Cleary Foundation. (2) Lower Road, Crabble (NE side) Crabble Mill. Grade II. This mill was originally built to grind flour for the troops posted in Kent during the Napoleonic Wars. Dated 1812. Built over the River Dour. 6 storyes,the lower 3 storeys of brick, the upper 3 storeys of white weatherboarding. Eaves cornice. 4 sashes. Projecting lucam on the S side and a flint and weatherboarded annexe to the E. The water wheel has been covered over. (3) On 17th December 1986, by a substantial majority, Dover District Council decided to apply for listed building consent to demolish the mill. Repairs are estimated at #400,000, and no organisation has yet been found to take responsibility for the refurbishment (see illustration card). (4)


In 1939 EJG Amos reported in Archaeologia Cantiana that an excavation on the north side of the mill exposed rubble foundations and a floor of red tiles, 8.5 in square and bricks 9 x 4.125 inches in size. The structure was believed not to be particularly old as a quoin of the wall was built of Dutch clinkers. (5, 6).
