The following text is from the original listed building designation:
SOUTH STREET 1. 1035 (North Side) No 9 (Carter House) TR 3752 NE 1/36 1.6.49. II GV 2. An L-shaped C18 house. 2 to 3 storeys and attic, now refronted in cement. Tiled roof with curved gable and 2 dormers. Moulded eaves cornice. 5 sashes on the south street elevation and 2 on the Middle Street elevation, with glazing bars intact. Mrs Elizabeth Carter (l717-l8O6) the scholar and authoress and friend of Dr Johnson lived here from 1762 until her death. No 9 forms a group with Nos 2 to 16 (even) and Cheyne Cottage, Middle Street.
