Full Description
Queen Elizabeth's Pocket Pistol is a cannon built in 1544 in Utrecht by Jan Tolhuys. The Cannon is in bronze, it measures 24 ft in length and is decorated with engravings of fruit, flowers, grotesques, and figures symbolizing Liberty, Victory and Fame. Until the 19th century it occupied a wooden stand near the cliff edge but was moved onto a gun carriage on which it still sits in 1827. This carriage was constructed by the Duke of Wellington in 1821 and has the Royal Arms and shell, dolphin and Tudor rose motifs. The wheels have spokes in the form of fasoes with fleurs de lye inside the rim and lions headi decorating the axles. It is It was embedded in a plinth of paving stone near Cannons Gate but has now been removed for conservation and re-sited and put on display inside The NAFFI building to prevent further deterioration from the salt-laden winds off the Channel. It is a GII Listed feature. (1-3)
