Description from record TR 35 NW 40:
[TR 32915817] St John's Hospital (pre-1287) (site of) [NAT] St John's Hospital was founded before 1287 for nine brothers and six sisters but this was later reduced to twelve inmates. It was not suppressed at the Dissolution (a). In Boys' day it occupied a large ancient building on the NW side of the Cornmarket (area centred TR 32915817) and consisted of a hall and rooms together with a building called the Harbinge for travellers (b). By the mid C18 the buildings had become ruinous and the inmates were reduced to six. In 1805 the hospital, consisting of six tenements, was rebuilt on the same site, and is still occupied today under the administration of trustees. (1)

St Johns Hospital Almshouses [Nos 1 to 6 (consec)] TR 3258 1/230 II GV
2. These almshouses are set back from the roadway to one side and behind the Sandwich United Reformed Church. They comprise a row of 6 houses dated 1805. Founded in 1287 but rebuilt at the rear in the C17 and refaced at the front. Yellow brick, tiled roof, red brick modillion eaves cornice, yellow rubbed brick arches over windows, ditto segmental arches over doors. All glazing bars complete. Modern 2 panel doors with upper panel glazed.
Nos 14 to 22 (even) and St Johns Hospital Almshouses, United Reformed Church together with Nos 2 to 12 (even) Moat Sole form a group.
