Monument record TQ 83 NW 13 - Undated rectangular mound, Chittenden Wood, Cranbrook/Biddenden parish boundary

Summary

An undated rectangular mound is located near the boundary between the parishes of Cranbrook and Biddenden. It is 29m in length, 5m wide and survives to a height of between 0.7-1.3m There is also the remains of a surrounding ditch. The mound is not thought to be a long barrow, rather of relatively modern date. It has been suggested it may be a work of French Prisoners of War, but no definite purpose has yet been determined. Full Description

[TQ 8185 3665] Low mound on W. of stream, at junction of Cranbrook and Biddenden parishes. 18ft. from boundary stone. Probably French P.O.W. work. Not a long barrow. (1) Long narrow steep sided mound, 29.0 metres long, 5.0 metres broad and 0.7 metres high except at N. end where it rised to 1.3 metres. Orientated N.-S., completely encircled by steep-sided ditch, 2.0 metres wide, 0.7 metres deep. Not a long barrow, and of comparatively late date, purpose not determined. (2)

Description from record TQ 83 NW 44:
A small rectangular earthwork exists in a clearing in woodland. It consists of a rectangular mound 28 m x 5.6 m and 1.5 - 2 m high. A parish boundary stone is located on the earthwork.Suggested functions include a boundary bank or rabbit warren.(4)
