1715 OAKS ROAD Hales Place TQ 8833 1/125 8.5.50. II* GV 2. A large early C16 timber-framed L-shaped house which has been considerably altered at later dates. It is now fronted partly with red brick, partly with red mathematical tiles and partly with weather tiles, but one strip of timber-framing is still visible. Tiled roof. A few original windows with wooden mullions and diamond panes. Some C18 sash windows with glazing bars intact, and modern windows. Brick chimney stacks. Doorcase on south side with caryatid columns and four-centred arch. On the north side is a doorcase with a flat hood over supported by grotesque caryatids and a 10 panelled door. Good staircase, panelling, fireplaces and ceiling beams inside. 1718. Seven bays by four. Architectural description. Garden Turrets in grounds of Hales Place TQ 8833 1/125B 8.5.50. II* GV 2 early C16 low octagonal red brick turrets with castellated parapets and a wall connecting them. Each side has double blank lancets with hood moulding over. Brick coping. No roofs. (1) (TQ 8863340) Hales Place (NAT) (TQ 88863349 and TQ 88903348, Garden Turrets located as octagonal unroofed structures grade II*. (2) The Elizabethan Hales Place has all gone except a wide and deep four centred brick entrance arch, 17th century grotesque brackets on the front door of the present house. There are remains of an Elizabethan garden. Brick walls, enclose a rectangle with octagonal two storeyed pavilions at the east corners. They are of brick, and have blocked arched lights in pairs and, by the doorways, elongated Tuscan columns. Outside the the rectangle, a little Wellhouse with crowstepped gables. (3)
