Full Description

(TQ 44474614, sited to ground west of church). A small salvage excavation on open land to the west of St Lawrence's church in February 1973 was carried out with the aim of retrieving anyinformation left in the ground after amateur excavations in 1971. The1971 excavation carried out due to the discovery of a Roman coin (TQ 44 NW 7) thus provoking much local interest, left rumours of the discovery of a courtyard, wall, kiln and iron smelting works. Nothingrelating to the rumoured structures was found in 1973. An area of sandstone rubble, possibly a farm track was recorded. It seems probable that this was laid down in the 18th or 19th centuries. Sometime after the middle of the 19th century a land drain was laid east west across the area and this cut through the rubble track to flow into the stream. A substantial stone built culvert was then constructed to carry the water under the track and the track then repaired. Nothing of Roman date was found. (1)
