Full Description
TQ 961487. A small Romano-British building was excavated in January 1975. The site was discovered in 1974 following cropmarks noticed in 1967. Originally a single roomed building with a small projecting room or fronting corridor to the south. It measured approx. 33 x 19 feet with ragstone walls 2.5 feet thick. At a later stage two rooms were added to the west wall, rooms 1 and 4. Room 4 was built on an area spread with soot, ash, burnt bones and the debris of bronze working. Beneath this room, which measured 10 x 12 feet approx, was a channelled hypocaust. A flue was located in thewest corner of room 1. Later still a suite of two rooms, 3 and 6, were added to the west walls of room 2. Room 3 measured 30 x 19 feet and room 6 14 x 11 feet approx. Tentative conclusions suggest that the first building was a workshop for bronze manufacture. It was then converted to agricultural use with the hypocaust being interpreted as a corn-drier. All evidence points to a date of occupation later than AD 225, a silver denaruis of Elagabalus having been found. (1)
Field immediately to south of excavated site has quantities of Ro building material and pot in ploughsoil, fields to west and south of that are presaently permanent pasture but display possible earthworks of unknown type and date. (2)
