Full Description
Description from record TR 06 SW 51:
[TR 0156 6140] No's 5 and 6 The Market Place, Grade II*. 15th century, possibly earlier, timber-framed houses built round an internal courtyard. (Forfull description see list.) (1) No.s 5 and 6 Market Place, Faversham, have a medieval pointed stone doorway. It leads into a passage, and so into a tiny courtyard, timber-framed on three sides, with a continuous overhang hidden by a pent roof. This is a complete courtyard house and can be dated to the14th century, which makes it an exceptional rarity. (2) 6 Market Square; now a chemist's shop. Much of its interest was only revealed recently during repair work. It has an early 19th century shop-front, behind which is concealed a remarkably complete mid 15th century timber-framed house of courtyard type. In its last medieval phase there were three shops facing the market place, above which weretwo large chambers. Behind the shops, running parallel to the street front was the hall. The courtyard was to the west with ranges on its west and north sides and a pentice running along at least three sides. The greater part of the original building still survives, although some additional partitions, etc. ... tend to obscure the original layout. (See Illustration Card for plans and sections.) The hall provides some interesting features - its main frame appearing to survive from an earlier structure of possible late 13th century date. Insertions within this frame can be identified with two succeeding periods, the first contemporary with the main body of the house, i.e. 15th century, and the second, the inserted floor of the previously open hall, probably part of a considerable re-modelling of the whole house.
