Full Description
Not clear but may be subcircular ditched enclosure, quite large, west of `T' junction at Blue House Farm. (1) Earthwork survey at TR 063 295, reveals that the field is bisected by substantial earthwork ditch, this passes through 2 slightly irregular semi-circular enclosures. The main earthwork ditch predates the circular enclosure and probably represents a medieval field boundary. The enclosure was probably created in the C16 to protect coppices of thorn. Survey in the same field (according to modern field boundaries, labelled parts a and b by the author) at TR 063 295, revealed a substantial earthwork ditch running from NW-SE. Land to the SW of this ditch is ploughed out, the remainder of the field is subdivided into smaller closes, forming an irregular grid-like pattern. Feint traces of an unusual curving earthwork ditch can be seen in the middle of the area. Most of the earthwork ditches are remnants of the medieval field system, the small size of the plots suggests that the field system was probably cultivated in the early MD period. The curving boundaries of the coppice are superimposed on the field system. (2)
