Full Description

The following text is from the original listed building designation:
TQ 64 SW CAPEL CASTLE HILL, PEMBURY ROAD
5/217 Burgess Hill Farmhouse (formerly listed as Mayday Farm) 14.10.87 GV II
Farmhouse. Early C18, possibly C17 origins, extended in the C19, some C20 modernisation. Mostly Flemish bond red brick with decorative burnt headers, north west end is timber-framed and clad with peg-tile; brick stack on sandstone base, brick chimneyshaft; peg-tile roof.
Plan: 3-room plan house facing south west. It is set back a little from a grass lane (now the drive) which was evidently the main road before it moved further down the hill to where it now is. The main room is the right room and it has a projecting gable end stack.
2 storeys with attics in the roofspace. Late C19 one-room extension on the left (north east) end and C20 one-room plan extnesion rear right rising above lean-to outshots across the back.
Exterior: Irregular 3-window front of C20 casements containing rectangular panes of leaded glass. Front doorway is left of centre and contains a C20 plank door under a contemporary monopitch hood on curving brackets. Brick flat band across the front at first floor level. Main roof is gable-ended and contains 2 gabled dormers.
Interior: Not available for inspection at the time of this survey although original carpentry detail was recorded in the previous list description dated 1987. Chamfered beams were reported, one with scroll-stops but the roof was not described.
Listing NGR: TQ6098543967

The building was surveyed in 2009. From the report: "The farmhouse stands on the south edge of the farmyard, with gardens its west and south sides and paved areas to the north and east (Plate 2). To the east, the land drops to the
paddock and fields beyond. To the west, the farmhouse is separated from the road by a row of trees. The building has three storeys and a basement and has been extended over time, with an extension on the north-east side of the house and a small single-storey outshot on the north-west side of the building, both probably added in the late 19th/ early 20th century. The building has also been heightened to create additional attic accommodation. Externally,
the house is constructed of red brick with clay peg tile cladding on the north-west and south-east elevations, and a clay peg tile roof. Internally, many of the rooms are decorated for use as a family home, including a kitchen
and reception rooms on the ground floor and bedrooms on the floors above. The main rooms on the ground and first floors are arranged to allow a circular route to be taken around each floor. All the rooms are decorated and furnished to reflect the most recent use of the building as a 21st century family home; all the floors are covered with carpets,
linoleum or tiles and the majority of the walls are plastered and painted or wallpapered. The second floor appears to have been a later addition created when the house was heightened. This alteration has completely removed the original roof structure. Features of historical note pertaining to the building’s development and use can be found, however,
throughout the house." [1]
