Full Description

From the report: "In June, 2009 AOC Archaeology were commissioned to undertake an historic buildings survey of Burgess Hill Farm in order to both provide a detailed permanent record of the farm buildings and to also make an assessment which will be used in an Environmental Impact Assessment. This survey included a full written drawn and photographic record to a Level 3 standard of the farmhouse and the barn. A Level 1 historic building record was also carried out on the oasthouse, garage and stables which involved a written record, drawn and annotated plans and a general photographic record. Burgess Hill Farm was one of the estate farms held by the Somerhill estate and was probably established in the 17th century as the estate itself developed. The early farm probably comprised a timber-framed house and barn only with further agricultural buildings being added over time as the farm responded to agricultural and economic changes. Much of the timber-framed construction survives within the internal walls of the farmhouse and probably the barn as well but both were largely rebuilt and encased in brick in the early 18th century. The 19th century brought various introductions and additions to the farm as it was sold with the estate. These included the addition of an oasthouse and various extensions suggesting that the farm was becoming well established. Many of the farm buildings have survived along with the farmhouse and although they have been modified to accommodate a modern family home, many of the historical features, both internally and externally have been retained."
