Full Description

In 2009 the stable block was surveyed as part of a general building recording programme at Burgess Hill Farm.

From the report:

"Introduction
The stables adjoin the eastern corner of the barn, and are constructed in a similar manner:
a timber frame cladded on the exterior with weatherboarding, and a clay peg tile roof (Plate
32). The stables have brick foundations that appear to be constructed in the Flemish bond
in places, suggesting the building is contemporary with the barn (believed to be 18th
century). The stables are first shown, like the barn, on the 1838 tithe map. The barn has a
small extension to its south-east end which appears to be a late 19th / early 20th century
construction.

7.2 The exterior
Access to the stables is through a stable door in the south-west elevation or through a
similar doorway in the north-west elevation (Plate 33). There is an opening at the south end
of the south-west wall that may have been a former door. There is also an opening beside
this that opens into the brick extension and has a timber plank door in front. In the opposing
wall of the extension is a doorway leading into the extension.

7.3 The interior (Figure 25)
The interior of the stables is largely late 20th century with chipboard panel walls and a
single partition dividing the main room into two separate stalls (Plate 34). A doorway in the
north-east wall of Room B.0.4 of the barn leads directly into the stable and a doorway in the
south-east wall leads to the later extension. Internally, there are no features of historical
significance within the stables."
