Full Description

From TR 09664287 to TR 09774278, a long mound is discernable on the south west slope of the downs, running parallel with the slope. When ploughed in 1971 the ground immediately above and below were bare chalk and the mound itself of darker soil. In 1975 two trial trencheswere cut near the eastern end to determine whether it was artificiallyconstructed on the old land-surface or was naturally produced in the form of a lynchet from ploughing. No evidence of deliberate building was found nor definite stratification of potsherds, which were distributed similarly in both trenches. Finds included early Iron age and Romano-British pottery and a considerable number of flint scrapers, blades and flakes. (1)
