Summary

Two linear features - fills contained animal bone, peg tile, rubble and pottery of medieval period, AD 1200-1250 and AD 1200-1350. 3 other linear features contained pottery dating from AD 1075 to 1350. Pottery and animal bones found in a number of pits. Whole cooking pot and fragments of another both dated AD 1200-1250. Grass seeds and cereal grains in whole pot. A number of large pits contained variety of medieval pottery from various periods (ranging from early to late). Area possibly used for dumping of domestic rubbish from C12th (possibly even earlier).

Full Description

Two linear features - fills contained animal bone, peg tile, rubble and pottery of medieval period, AD 1200-1250 and AD 1200-1350. 3 other linear features contained pottery dating from AD 1075 to 1350. Whole cooking pot and fragments of another both dated AD 1200-1250. Grass seeds and cereal grains in whole pot. A number of large pits contained variety of medieval pottery from various periods (ranging from early to late). Early medieval jar and 14 sherds of another. One small pit contained a layer of ash and burnt clay which may indicated dumping of domestic waste and other rubbish. Area possibly used for dumping of domestic rubbish from C12th (possibly even earlier) as some of the pits were backfilled with later medieval debris. (1)

Six features - rubbish pits AD 1075-1250 and AD 1100-1250, occupational deposit/remnant with 5 sherds of pottery AD 1100-1250, and a structural remnant with pottery AD 1175-1350. 3 large pits with pottery AD 1225-1400, whittle tang knife, animal bone, glass, and building debris. Decorated jug strap handle. Small pit AD 1200-1350 including 3 sherds of medieval pottery. Pit containing animal bones and pottery fragments AD 1200-1350, including fragment of imported white slipped baluster jug AD 1240. Linear features containing pottery AD 1100-1400. A circular pit contained pottery AD 1425-1550 and fragments of peg tile.

Small square post hole containing animal bones and pottery AD 1240-1400 including a fragment of Kinston Type Ware. Fragment of Langerwehe drinking vessel. Horse metatarsal recovered. (2)
