Full Description
From the report
"Only one feature of archaeological significance was encountered on the site, a small pit or ditch terminal containing pottery of Medieval date originating in the Tyler Hill kilns of Canterbury. The range of fabrics within the pit indicated that it had been backfilled by the 14th century but incorporated some fabrics possibly as early as the 12th century. No other features or finds of this date were made within the area of the development. Old Tree farm house is located to the west of the development area and if a medieval settlement was present on the site it might be presumed to be focussed around the farm house and domestic buildings in this area although the Farm House itself is of 19th century date. Historic mapping indicates that the whole Old Tree Farm complex was only established in the earlier part of the 19th centuryand perhaps the medieval feature should be associated with the outer limits of Hoath or in a series of small locations close to the ancient east west running route of Maypole Street.
The majority of features encountered on the site related to the use of the area as a focus for a complex of agricultural buildings probably originating no later than the early 19th century. All the structures and cut features encountered represented services and functional elements of these buildings. The standing buildings in the farmyard demonstrated a progression from a building complex associated with grain processing to adaptation to a cattle farm in the later 20th century. A stock yard was created by the addition of ad-hoc walls and additions to the existing buildings to house cattle within the core of the building complex."
