Full Description

From the report:

"This report presents the results of an initial phase of work of archaeological recording of the proposed new Mid Kent College campus, off Prince Arthur Road, Brompton, Medway, Kent. This report is designed to highlight any surviving archaeological or historical remains present on the site but does not provide detailed archaeological or historical background to the site nor has it sought to determine or examine any documentary evidence that might exist relating to the study site.

The brief walkover survey has demonstrated that significant archaeological remains associated with the military use of the site over the past two hundred years survive across the proposed development area. Perhaps the most important of these are the in situ gabions is perhaps unique and given that the site was a major training facility for the Royal Engineers is a survival that is unlikely to be repeated elsewhere. The gabions should therefore be considered to be of national importance and as such their retention through preservation in situ is recommended.

The 'V' shaped ditch and corrugated iron revetment form part of the World War II development of the site and their location witin the new college campus. At the time of the walkover survey these features were partially obscured by vegetation. A more detailed record made of their form, date and function should be made following their clearance of vegetation. Dismantling and excavation across a section of the ditch and revetmen is likely to yield further information regarding its initial construction and is also recommneded.

Following the results of this report it is likely that further survey and recording work will be required on both features identified during this initial walkover and any features that may be exposed following further vegetation clearance."
