Full Description

Archaeological investigations during 2004 discovered the remains of a post-medieval brick and tile kiln in Chingley Wood. As the site was not to be disturbed by the pipeline no formal investigation took place but the excavators did make some observations. The site consists of the furnace arches of three kilns placed side by side but set back from one another. They are ranged along the north side of a large hollow which was presumed to be the stoking area. On the western side a small gully connected the site with a stream running down to the river.

Brick and stone foundations lie close to the stream and in the stream bed itself there are the remains of a brick water channel. Loose debris in the area consisted of peg tiles and field drains. A number of bricks were also found that suggested a late 19th or 20th century date. (1, 2)
