Full Description
During the construction of the A21 Lamberhurst bypass in 2003 the remains of the Scotney Castle park pale or boundary were found. These consisted of a earthen bank and ditch.
Two trenches were excavated. Trench 1 to the east revelaed nothing of archaeological interest. Trench 2, however, revealed a ditch, 2.2 m wide and 1.2 m deep and, immediately to the south, a ditch 1.4 m wide and 0.3 m deep. These were interpreted as being part of the pale or boundary of the Scotney Castle estate. (1)
