Full Description

An evaluation of the former cattle market in 2003 by the Museum of London found that the site had been much lowered by the construction of the cattle market in the mid 19th century. Some evidence of medieval activity was found, however. In trench 4 in the west of the site a soil quarry was found (mke39996). In the eastern part of the site a number of rubbish pits were found in trench 12. These tended to be small, c. 50 cm across and 50 cm deep. They contained pottery dating from 1050 - 1250, roof tile, animal bone and iron slag. Several medieval and post medieval soi horizons were also found across the site but the construction of the cattle market had destoryed any remains of the town defences.

Evidence of the cattle market was also found in the form of areas of brick paving, cinder and ash and gravel surfaces. A brick-lined soakaway was also thought to relate to the construction of the market (1).
