Full Description

Several archaeological features found in three of five trenches. One trench contained 5 pits - 4 pits of late medieval/early post medieval date, within which were some flint, osyter shells and charcoal flecks, as well as some pottery of either late medieval or early post medieval date, as well as a modern pit. In another trench was a small pit filled with rubble and a well or soakaway of yellow brick, also filled with rubble, both of which were late post medieval/modern in date. Also post medieval red brick line drain found in another trench, running NE to SW across the trench which contained backfill and rubble. (1)

Further analysis of post-medieval features detailed a sherd from a 15th-century lobed cup in tudor green ware found in small pit truncating an earlier Roman one. Five features dated to 1450-1550 could also be decribed as late medieval containing sherds of Medway-type ware, Hairplain-type ware, greyware and LM34A ware. (2)

Small sherds of pottery from the 16th-17th century included one of the 'earliest imports to the site': a sherd of a Cologne stoneware jug. Wealden, Cistercian. Post-medieval calcareous ware (PM64) were also represented. In addition to these, in the north-west corner of the site were found two small sherds of Surrey/Hampshire border ware and polychrome tin-glazed ware. Sherds representing vessels of a red sandy ware and Frechen stoneware were also found.(2)

One context contained 15 pieces of glass dated c.1725-1780 consisting of household vessels, wine bottles and pharmaceutical phials. A substantial number of clay pipe fragments dating between c.1640 to c.1900 were also found in this phase of the excavation. There is evidence of clay pipe manufacture due to many of the specimens' fragmentary natury and unused condition.(2)

Analysis of animal bone showed specimens of horse, cow, sheep/goat, pig, dog, hare, rabbit and chicken. (2)
