Full Description
A number of features, post holes and pits containing small finds ranging from the Bronze age to the Roman periods at Snoll Hatch (along the Hadlow to High Halden pipline route).
Among the topsoil was found a sherd of Bronze Age pottery (see below) and other pottery mostly dating to C1st/2nd AD, though some was C4th AD or later. Amongst the subsoil C2nd/3rd AD (or earlier) pottery was found as well as Roman roof tiles, including box flue tile, tegula and imbrex roof tiles.
18 pits in total (19 including another one found in the river channel fill, see below) varying in size and shape. Some pits (at least 4) were intercut. Pits contained worked flint and pottery including one sherd of a Bronze age collared urn. Pottery is mostly C1st to 2nd AD. But some is C4th or later.
11 postholes (2 groups of five and one separate one) all of which contained worked flint and pottery, mostly from the mid-to-late Iron Age, as well as a Mesolithic microlith.
3 features were cut into river channel fills, including 2 small linear features and a large shallow pit. The pit contained C1st/2nd AD pottery, but its loose fill suggests that it was a modern feature with residual finds.
Residual finds included Bronze Age pottery and flint from the Mesolithic and Neolithic periods. (1)
