Monument record TQ 74 NW 100 - Several Roman period features and small finds at Broad Forstal

Summary

Pits, post holes and ditches containing Roman pottery and tiles at Broad Forstal. Several pieces of residual worked flint also found. A rectilinear pattern of ditches defined a group of small enclosures. One large pit and several smaller ones as well as the fill of the of the ditches produced relatively large quantities of pottery, mostly dated to the C2nd or C3rd AD.

Full Description

A rectilinear pattern of ditches defined a group of small enclosures. One large pit and several smaller ones as well as the fill of the of the ditches produced relatively large quantities of pottery, mostly dated to the C2nd or C3rd AD.

Roman pottery dating from C1st to C3rd AD, as well as Roman tile (including tegula) and daub were found in several ditches. A pit contained similar finds, but also included a layers of burnt clay and charcoal and a grey-ware pot, which was complete apart from a hole in its side. Charred cereal remains included emmer (wheat), spelt chaff and oat. The charcoal was mostly oak with some birch.

Two quern stones of Mayen Lava and Greensand.
