Monument record TQ 74 SE 252 - Pits and other features containing possible Iron Age pottery and iron smelting slag at Lindridge
Summary
Several large pits and other features, probably of Late Iron Age date, were found at Lindridge. Two shallow, roughly circular features contained charcoal and slag. Two tear-drop features had similar contents. Pottery sherds dating from 1st and 2nd centuries were found and several square post holes. A gully contained iron smelting slag and included charcoal with a carbon dating of 60BC to 80AD.
A rectangular pit contained 10 sherds of Iron Age pottery while another pit had 1 sherd of pot, from Late Iron Age to Roman in date. A grain of bread wheat was found.
