Full Description
In 2008 an archaeological evaluation took place at a site west of the High Street, Eynsford. The only clear archaeological feature discovered was a small pit containing three oyster shells. The pit is interpreted as being of medieval or post medieval date but the function is unknown.
Three trenches were excavated and within them, two test-pits. Only trench 1, close to the High Street, found features being the small sub-circular pit 0.9 m in diameter and 0.2 m deep. The only finds from the pit were three pieces of oyster shell. A modern well was also found. Trench 3 (closest to the river) found two oak posts that had been driven into the ground, presumably as piling. Neither could be recovered though.
The two test pits suggested thick alluvial deposits in the west of the site. These sealed a layer of fen peat over river gravels. Environmental samples suggested that settlement (indicated by hulled wheat) was located close to the site and that the peat formed some time between the middle bronze age (c. 1500 BC) and the end of the Roman period (1)
