Full Description

A Second World War air-raid shelter was built for the pupils of Furness school, Hextable. It was 15.1 m long x 4.85 m wide and 2.5 m high. The roof was 16 - 21 cm thick. There were two shelter rooms, each with a smaller cubicle and an additional room at the north end of the building. There were two doorways in the east side of the building opening on to individual entrance passages via an air-lock. These would have been covered by impregnated fabric gas screens The two halves of the shelter were separated by a dividing wall and there was no access from one half to the other. Both the floor and roof were of poured concrete.

The walls were 34 cm thick and built of English bond brick.

The shelter was similar to many surface air-raid shelters although the additional room at the north end of the building was unusual. The shelter is now believed to be demolished. (1)
