Full Description

Three probable Iron Age boundary ditches which contained abraded pottery sherds probably Iron Age date, but which may be Saxon. Two other ditches to the East contained Late Iron Age pottery sherds. Ditches are dated by abraded pottery sherd finds and appear to be two distinct phases of development. (1)

Excavations in May/June 2005. Three areas. This work suggests the site may be in Saxon in date or that iron ages features have been recut in the Saxon period?. Total of 17 postsherds, mostly c.AD 550-850 (?), but also one from a Late Bronze Age urn.

Area A contained east-west aligned Late Iron Age (?) ditch with charcoal rich, secondary fill. The ditch was re-cut at some point. 13 potsherds (crushed flint and grog-tempered pots with rough brown surfaces) dating to c.AD 550-850, recovered from ditch fills. Cluster of 5 postholes/post pits in the centre of which was a large post pit or post setting. Another larger, square pit contained scorched sandstone fragments.

Area B contained a cluster of 5 pits of various sizes in the S-E corner. The largest of theses contained ragstone fill. One pit was cut by two posthole-like features the first of which contained 6 potsherds c.550-850.

Area C. Ditch with two slots cut into it. Two small features, one circular, one rectangular in an area to north of this ditch. The rectangular one contained blue-and white glazed pottery suggesting a relatively modern (C19th?) date. Two handaxes (see MKE40306) of Middle/Lower Palaeolithic date (residual finds) (2)
