Full Description
Second World War radio listening post in a concrete underground bunker in the rear garden of a house in Mayfield Road, Northfleet. Within, a civilian radio volunteer radio operator listened into, recorded and reported to the intelligence services German services radio traffic. The post is about 2.3 m x 1.6m x 2m high and accessed down a short flight of steps from the garden. Within are the remains of a table on which radio equipment was mounted. Here a civilian volunteer of the Radio Security Service (RSS) sat. Transcriptions of recorded messages were collected daily by a courier and delivered to intelligence headquartrers at Bletchley Park. The post appear to have been in operation from 1939 until 1945 and the bunker is intact.
