Full Description

In March and April 2005 a trial trenching evaluation was carried out at the site. 14 trenches were eventually excavated. In most no archaeological remains were encountered due to the great depth of the river gravels on the site (often up to 2.7m deep). Only 3 trenches revealed archaeological remains in the form of 2 ditches in trench 1 and 1 in trench 13. All three ditches were cut into the upper subsoil and extended to a depth of 0.3m. Little dating evidence was recovered although very small fragments of pottery may suggest a late bronze age to iron age date.

One of the ditches in trench 1 and the ditch in trench 13 were both on a north-south alignment. The other ditch in trench 1 was perpendicular which may suggest a field system.(1)
