Full Description

An archaeological evaluation consisting of three trenches and five geoarchaeological test pits was undertaken at a school ahead a proposed new additional school building. The work revealed a similar stratigraphic sequence across the site, a layer of colluvium was observed overlying a layer of alluvium. Within the lowest deposit of colluvium archaeological remains were observed which consited of occasional burnt clay flecks, fire-cracked flints and bone, suggesting the presence of a probable domestic hearth area, and above that, Roman ceramic building material (CBM).
The upper part of the colluvium deposit contained post-medieval CBM. The colluvium was overlain by post-medieval subsoil and topsoil. A possible prehistoric/Roman pit and gully was also recorded. (1)
