Full Description

An archaeological evaluation of land at 231-235 High Street, Rochester, found an undated posthole alignment that could have been a jetty. A large pit was also recorded. These features were sealed beneath a post-medieval subsoil and garden soil.

Environmental samples were taken and found to contain small quantities of wood charcoal and some chaff.

The trenching for the evaluation was very deep and through unstable soils, additionally the area fronting the street could not be explored and had been severely impacted upon by a modern basement, meaning these results may not reflect the full extent of activity on the site (1).
