Full Description
An evaluation in 2009 of land at the site of the former Chambers Cycle Store in Rochester by means of five trenches found elements of the medieval guardhouse located during earlier archaeological works on the site in the 1970s. No additional dating evidence was recovered so Harrison's dating, that it was built in the 12th century and demolished in the early 17th century, remains unchallenged.
There was limited additional medieval activity on the site suggesting the area was used as horticultural or agricultural land possibly associated with plots that fronted the medieval High Street. A residual Anglo-Saxon sherd was found in a medieval pit (1).
