Full Description
An evaluation in 2009 of land at the site of the former Chambers Cycle Store in Rochester by means of five trenches found a Tudor brick drain, two walls and a pit, all dating to the post-medieval period.
The drain suggests that the medieval use of the area, as open land, possibly cultivated, continued into the early post-medieval period.
The walls were built of ragstone and ran parallel to one another. They are thought to have been built in the early 16th century, perhaps around the time that the nearby medieval guardroom was demolished. Their alignment suggests that they formed either part of a building or parts of separate building in the same range which fronted the southern side of George Lane. One of the walls was cut by an 18th century pit whilst the other appears to have been repaid or rebuilt and continued in use in the late 18th or early 19th century. (1)
