Full Description

31 trenches were excavated across the Rochester Riverside development site in late 2004 and early 2005. In trenches in the southern part of the site six grave cuts and a possible cremation burial, all thought to date to the Roman period, were found. Only one of the graves was partially explored and was found to contain a skull. No dating material was recovered (1-2).

An evaluation in 2008 in this area located three linear features containing Roman pottery. These were interpreted as boundary ditches to the cemetery. (3) It is possible, however, that burials do extend further to the west and north than the report proposes.
