Monument record TR 25 NW 437 - A ditch and some flints found during an evaluation excavation

Summary

An evaluation in 2005 found a ditch. It contained some fragments of daub and worked flints were recovered from above it. It is thought to be a prehistoric or Roman field ditch but no dating evidence was recovered to confirm this.

Full Description

In 2005 11 evaluation trenches were dug across the site, land to the north of the Fire Station, Staple Road, Wingham. All but one of the trenches were devoid of archaeological features. The only recorded feature was a ditch, 0.89m wide and 0.07m deep. It ran the length of the evaluation trench and was not fully exposed. It is likely to have been a truncated ditch, probably part of a field system. The excavators concluded that it was prehistoric or Roman and drew an association to the nearby Roman villa. No dating evidence, however, was recovered. Four worked flints were also found above the ditch (1).
