Full Description
Area one of excavation, undertaken in 2008 prior to school development.
Area one was situated north of the main Friars school building, measuring approximately 55m by 40m. The archaeology was located in shallow, irregular features, with most of the area remaining above the level at which the archaeological deposits were located. Medieval pottery and residual late Iron Age/Roman pottery sherds were located in colluvial deposits, believed to be tree hollows formed as part of medieval tree clearance at the site. A number of post holes and pits also dated to the medieval period and are likely to represent agricultural use of the area, linked to the tree clearance. (1-2)
