Full Description

Saxo-Norman and medieval remains were found in area 2B, Brisley Farm, Ashford, excavated between 16 August to 2 September 1999. Eleven pits with in-situ burning dated to the Saxo-Norman period, obtained from AMS and standard radiocarbon techniques, and one pit cluster dated AD 43+. Two later medieval ditches running in parallel E-W, dissected by a N-S ditch. Five structures were found, a clean area with stone scatters, with evidence for stone packing, possibly a sleeper wall for a timber construction. Also, four postholes were found to the south and east.13 to 14 century pottery were also found in fills, latterly used as a 16 century rubbish dump and possible beam slots were found. Later ditches identified continuous activity from the mid 13 to 16 century. (1)
